The Inspire 2022 celebrations are in full flow, with community events taking place across the UK!
Taking inspiration from the tenth anniversary of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Inspire 2022 is a year-long programme putting young people at the heart of their communities through events-based social action.
The initiative uses national events as a springboard for young people to design positive activities for their own communities, bridging community divides and giving them a voice during a year of national celebration.
One example of the fantastic events that are currently taking place across the UK is the ‘Bringing Throckley Together’ Family Fun Day, which was hosted by Throckley Youth Project and supported by NE Youth.
The result of months of hard work, the day concluded the group’s Inspire 2022 Social Action Project with a focus on fundraising to install a defibrillator into Throckley Sports Pavillion, where the group are based two nights a week.
Over 200 people from Throckley and the surrounding areas attended and the event raised £765, providing a substantial contribution towards buying a defibrillator for the centre – something the group are extremely passionate about.
With the support of their youth workers, the young people planned boxing workshops, football, archery, hook-a-duck, a smoothie bike, a DJ, a rodeo bull, a hot dog stand, bungee run and a gladiator inflatable.
Jon Niblo, Chief Executive of NE Youth, said: “The Fun Day at Throckley was such an incredible day. During such a challenging period for families it was so amazing to see such a strong community spirit and everyone enjoying some fantastic affordable and fun activities. Well done to everyone involved.”
